Blue Cave Tour from Split: What to Know Before You Go
By Paradise Charter · 18 May 2026 · 7 min read
Modra špilja — the Blue Cave — is a sea cave on the south side of Biševo island, about 90 nautical minutes from Split. When sunlight enters the underwater opening it bounces off the white limestone floor and turns the entire cave neon-blue. It's astonishing, but the visit is short and the queue can be long. Here's the practical guide.
When the colour is at its best
The blue effect peaks between roughly 11:00 and 12:30 local time, when the sun is high enough to enter the underwater arch but not yet overhead. Earlier and the colour is softer; later and the angle washes out.
How the visit actually works
You can't take your own boat into the cave. Visitors transfer in groups of five to small rowing dinghies operated by the island co-operative; the entrance is a 1.5-metre arch you duck under. Inside, you have about ten to fifteen minutes before the next group enters.
- Buy tickets at the Mezuporat jetty on Biševo — credit cards accepted.
- The cave closes when swell exceeds about 0.6 m. Always have a backup plan (Stiniva, Green Cave, Budikovac).
- No swimming inside the cave. Photos with phones are fine; flash washes out the blue.
What we add to the day
Most Blue Cave trips also visit Stiniva cove on Vis, Budikovac lagoon, and the Green Cave on Ravnik. We time the loop so you hit the Blue Cave at peak colour and lunch in Komiža around 14:00.
Realistic expectations
It's a long day on the water — typically nine to ten hours door-to-door from Split. The Blue Cave itself is the highlight, but the surrounding islands carry the trip. If you only have half a day, go to the Blue Lagoon instead.
Frequently asked
- Is the Blue Cave worth it?
- Yes, if you go at the right time and pair it with Stiniva and Budikovac. As a standalone stop it's underwhelming because the visit is so short.
- How much does Blue Cave entry cost?
- Entrance fees are paid on Biševo and change each season. Check the latest rate when you book.
